How Girls Join St George Girls High School in Years 8 to 11

To join St George Girls High School in Year 8, 9, 10 or 11, a girl applies to the school and sits the HAST (Higher Ability Selection Test), set and marked by ACER. The Kogarah school is fully selective and may interview. Girls can prepare in Selective Success Academy's live online small-group HAST classes on Microsoft Teams.

The school has announced no dates (checked 3 October 2026)

Last checked 3 October 2026, using St George Girls High School's enrolment page, its FAQ for Years 8 to 11 applicants and the NSW Department of Education's Years 8 to 11 page.

The school's principal describes it as dedicated to high potential learners since 1916. It has no local intake area, so every student is selected, including girls who live nearby. The school does ask families to think about how long their daughter's daily trip to Kogarah would take if she is successful. To compare this route with the other NSW selective schools, read our selective school transfer guide.

How Years 8 to 11 entry works at St George Girls High School

Last cycle's round, for 2027 entry, ran in the order below. Each step comes from the school's own pages, mainly its enrolment page and Years 8 to 11 FAQ, and the documents they link to, except where the NSW Department of Education is named. That round has closed, and the school may change details for the next one.

  1. Decide your order of preference. St George Girls High School can be one of up to three selective high schools on your list, and each school needs a separate application. Where it sits in your order sets both the fee and where your daughter sits the HAST, as the table further down shows.
  2. Pay first, and keep the receipt number handy. The school's payment steps take you through an online payment page that finishes on a Service NSW screen. Pick the fee item that matches your daughter's year of entry and your preference. The fee is non-refundable. Use the same email address for the payment and the application.
  3. Save each document as its own PDF. "What to attach", further down, lists them.
  4. Lodge the application, online or at Reception. The school prefers its online Google Application Form, where you upload the PDFs and type in the receipt number. Opening it needs a Google account: a Gmail address, or the school email address of a child in your family who attends a government school. The other way is the NSW Department of Education's paper application form, left at Reception in a sealed envelope during the set windows in term time, with no appointment needed. The school does not accept applications by email or post, and if you have applied online, do not hand in a paper copy as well.
  5. Watch for the school's email. St George Girls High School confirms by email that it has received your application and payment.
  6. Your daughter sits the HAST. With St George Girls High School as first preference, she sits it at the school, on Victoria Street, Kogarah. Last cycle's sitting started at 9:30am on Saturday 8 August 2026. Students coming by train get off at Kogarah on the T4 line and walk, and there is no parent or student parking on school grounds. She does not need to wear her school uniform to the test.
  7. The school's Selection Committee decides on merit. It considers her performance across the four parts of the HAST and her two most recent school reports.
  8. She may be asked to an interview. The school says an interview is possible, based on HAST performance. When requested, she first completes a Personal Reflection Statement, written in her own handwriting.
  9. Outcomes. St George Girls High School gives no outcome date of its own for Years 8 to 11. For last cycle the NSW Department of Education set a September to October 2026 window for these outcomes, and late January 2027 for new students to start. A girl who is offered entry will need to show original documents, such as her birth certificate and citizenship evidence or visa.

Year 12. The school does not take new enrolments into Year 12, so Year 11 is the last year a girl can enter.

Who can apply. The enrolment page sets out citizenship rules, including one for students born in Australia that depends on a parent's status, and says New Zealand citizens are eligible but New Zealand permanent residents are not. The FAQ adds that permanent residency must be approved before an offer can be accepted. And by the beginning of the school year she would start, your family must be living in NSW.

What to attach

For the 2027-entry round, the online form asked for four documents, each saved as a separate PDF:

  • her latest school report, from Semester 1, 2026
  • the report before it, from Semester 2, 2025
  • her birth certificate
  • her Australian passport, or evidence of Australian citizenship

Send nothing else. The FAQ says to submit only the documents requested, so NAPLAN reports and award certificates are not needed. If the Semester 1 report has not been issued when you apply, upload the Semester 2, 2025 report in both sections, then email the 2026 report to the school when it arrives. Do not resubmit the application.

Fees, preferences and the test venue

St George Girls High School shares HAST results with a set list of selective schools, and your preferences decide what you pay. Last cycle it worked like this:

Your preferences, 2027 entryNon-refundable application feeWhere she sat the HAST
St George Girls High School first, or your only choice$140St George Girls High School
St George Girls High School second or third, with your first choice on the list below$50Your first-choice school

Fees as at 3 October 2026, from the 2027-entry round on the school's enrolment page and FAQ. No 2028-entry fee appears on the school's site yet.

If your first choice is not on the list but your next two are, the FAQ says to pay the application fee to the first school you chose from the list. If you are also applying to a school that is not on it, ask that school whether it tests on the same day.

The schools on St George Girls High School's list, which share results whichever of them you put first:

  • St George Girls High School
  • Caringbah High School
  • Fort Street High School (the school's list says Year 11 only)
  • Girraween High School

  • Hurlstone Agricultural High School
  • Macquarie Fields High School
  • Manly Selective Campus
  • Penrith Selective High School

2028 entry (exams in August 2027)

Nothing has been published yet. As at 3 October 2026, St George Girls High School's enrolment page carries only the 2027-entry round, marked closed, and the school's online application form says it is closed. We found no mention of 2028 entry anywhere on the school's website, and the NSW Department of Education lists only last cycle's dates. We do not project 2028-entry dates from last year's pattern. If you are weighing other schools too, our selective school transfer guide shows which of them have announced when 2028-entry applications begin.

The test

St George Girls High School tests all four parts of the HAST: reading comprehension, written expression, mathematical reasoning and abstract reasoning. ACER, the Australian Council for Educational Research, sets and marks the papers, and external invigilators supervise the sitting, both paid for from the application fee. ACER lists the school at junior, middle and senior secondary level, and on ACER's own mapping the middle secondary paper is for entry into Years 9 and 10 and the senior secondary paper for entry into Year 11.

Our HAST guide walks through each of the four parts, their timing and the levels.

How we prepare students for St George Girls High School

St George Girls High School gives each applicant one sitting of the HAST and no second date, so our aim is for your daughter to arrive on that single morning already used to the timing of each part and familiar with the format. Our HAST course is small-group tutoring taught live on Microsoft Teams, once a week for ten weeks a term, two hours a lesson. The price table that follows sets out everything a term includes.

Written expression is one of the four parts the school assesses. In the course's full-length mock exam, a tutor marks her writing against Selective Success Academy's own criteria, which are not ACER's. Lessons use questions Selective Success Academy writes itself in the HAST's format, rather than ACER's material or past papers.

Before test day, read ACER's HAST Student Information Bulletin with your daughter. St George Girls High School links it from its enrolment page, and it sets out what to bring.

Free practice and guides

The cost of our HAST course

What you getPrice
Term course, live: 10 weekly lessons of 2 hours each, on Microsoft Teams$900 a term, which is $90 a lesson
The same live course, booked at the early bird price$800 a term
Term course, recordings only$600
Two term courses$1,400

Prices as at 1 October 2026.

The live term course is 20 hours of teaching, so $900 works out at $45 an hour. It includes small group classes, lesson recordings, a full-length mock exam with a comprehensive review, marking feedback on weekly homework and the mock, lesson and homework booklets, and online messaging support.

A question bank gives your child practice. It does not contain any teaching hours, and it cannot tell you which school to apply to, what the school report needs to show, or when the application closes.

To see which days and times suit your daughter, check the HAST classes on our timetable; every other course and its price is on courses and prices.

Questions parents ask about St George Girls High School entry

Which test does St George Girls High School use after Year 7?

For every year from Year 8 to Year 11, it is the HAST (Higher Ability Selection Test). The school's enrolment page says the application fee pays for ACER to set and mark the test, and that the Selection Committee considers performance in reading comprehension, written expression, mathematical reasoning and abstract reasoning. Entry into Year 7 is a separate process, handled by the NSW Department of Education's Selective Education Team. Each part is explained in our HAST guide.

How many places are there?

It varies by school and by year level, and St George Girls High School makes its own decisions. Its enrolment page gives the reason: before the senior years, a vacancy occurs only when a current student leaves the school. Across all selective schools, the NSW Department of Education leaves vacancies, assessments and placement decisions to each school. We never quote a number. Book a short call to talk through the year your daughter is applying for.

Are the dates for 2028 entry out yet?

No. As at 3 October 2026, St George Girls High School has published nothing about 2028 entry, and its enrolment page shows only the 2027-entry round, marked closed. Last cycle's HAST was on Saturday 8 August 2026, after applications closed at 3:00pm on Friday 24 July 2026; they had opened on Wednesday 17 June 2026. New dates will come from the school, so check its enrolment page before planning around last year's.

What did it cost to apply to St George Girls High School last time?

For 2027 entry, the non-refundable fee was $140 when St George Girls High School was your first or only preference, and your daughter sat the HAST at the school. When the school was your second or third preference and your first was one of the schools it shares HAST results with, the fee was $50 and she sat the test at your first-choice school. You paid online and entered the receipt number on the online application form. The 2028-entry fee has not appeared yet.

Could my daughter be called for an interview?

Possibly. St George Girls High School says a student may be interviewed based on her performance in the HAST. If the school asks, she first completes a Personal Reflection Statement in her own handwriting. The school has not published how the interview runs or what the statement asks.

What happens if my daughter is sick on test day?

There is no other date. The school's FAQ says there is no opportunity to sit the test for St George Girls High School at any other time, and that it is unable to reschedule the exam. Applicants who live overseas must come in person too, because every candidate sits the test on site.
