What is the HAST?

The HAST (Higher Ability Selection Test) is a multiple-choice assessment used to identify high-performing students for Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 selective school entry in NSW. It is an aptitude-based exam — focused on reasoning and skills rather than memorised content. Compared to the EduTest, the HAST gives students more time per question but tests deeper analytical skills, including a unique Abstract Reasoning section that does not appear in any other selective entrance exam.

Course Outline: The 4 HAST Sections

01

Reading Comprehension

45 mins | 35-40 questions

Assesses a student's ability to understand and interpret a range of texts — including fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction prose, diagrams, tables, charts and maps. The most varied reading section across selective tests.

~72 sec per question
Inference & main idea
Vocabulary in context
Visual data interpretation
Cross-genre analysis
02

Mathematical Reasoning

40 mins | 28-35 questions

Tests the ability to comprehend, interpret and analyse mathematical information at junior secondary level. At middle and senior secondary levels, this expands to include scientific reasoning alongside mathematics.

~76 sec per question
Number & arithmetic
Algebraic problem solving
Data interpretation
Scientific reasoning
03

Written Expression

25 mins | 1 task

A single written task that assesses the ability to express thoughts and feelings in written English. Students respond to a prompt with a structured, original piece — typically narrative or persuasive.

1 extended writing task
Structure & coherence
Vocabulary & expression
Grammar & punctuation
Idea development
04

Abstract Reasoning

30 mins | 30 questions

The HAST's signature section. Tests the ability to recognise relationships and perceive ideas at an abstract level using pattern recognition, hypothesising and evaluation of evidence — skills not directly taught in school.

~60 sec per question
Pattern recognition
Sequence completion
Logical hypothesising
Visual reasoning

HAST Preparation by Year Level

HAST preparation differs significantly by year level — different schools, different competition levels, different skill emphasis. We tailor coaching specifically to your child's entry year.

Year 8 Entry

Year 7 → Year 8 HAST Preparation

Year 7 students preparing for Year 8 HAST entry are competing for limited spots at HAST-using selective schools including Caringbah, Penrith, Girraween, Hurlstone Agricultural and St George Girls. Year 8 entry is highly competitive — early preparation focused on HAST's distinctive Abstract Reasoning section gives students a critical edge over those just relying on school content.

Coaching FocusAptitude foundations, abstract pattern recognition, exam timing
Year 9 Entry

Year 8 → Year 9 HAST Preparation

Year 9 HAST entry opens up larger numbers of selective school spots than Year 8. Year 8 students preparing for Year 9 HAST entry need stronger analytical reading, more sophisticated mathematical reasoning, and refined written expression. The HAST's slower pace (versus EduTest) rewards deeper thinking — preparation focuses on accuracy and reasoning depth.

Coaching FocusDeep reasoning, analytical reading, structured writing
Year 10 Entry

Year 9 → Year 10 HAST Preparation

Year 10 HAST entry is for Year 9 students seeking transfer into a HAST-using selective school. Mathematical Reasoning expands at this level to include scientific reasoning, and Reading Comprehension texts become more sophisticated. Year 10 HAST preparation must match this senior-level complexity, with advanced abstract reasoning and HSC-precursor writing skills.

Coaching FocusSenior reasoning, scientific analysis, advanced writing
Year 11 Entry

Year 10 → Year 11 HAST Preparation

Year 11 HAST entry — including Fort Street's Year 11 entry pathway — is the final major selective school transfer point before HSC. Year 11 entry suits students seeking the HSC outcomes, peer cohort and academic environment of selective schools. Preparation emphasises mature analytical writing, complex problem solving, and the disciplined exam composure required at this level.

Coaching FocusHSC-readiness, mature writing, advanced problem solving
