What is the HAST?

The HAST (Higher Ability Selection Test) is a multiple-choice assessment used to identify high-performing students for selective school entry in NSW. It is an aptitude-based exam — focused on reasoning and skills rather than memorised content. Compared to the EduTest, the HAST gives students more time per question but tests deeper analytical skills, including a unique Abstract Reasoning section that does not appear in any other selective entrance exam.

Course Outline: The 4 HAST Sections

01

Reading Comprehension

45 mins | 35-40 questions

Assesses a student's ability to understand and interpret a range of texts — including fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction prose, diagrams, tables, charts and maps. The most varied reading section across selective tests.
